How long does it take for credit to recover from collections?

I checked my credit report, and was suprised to see that I have a .00 account in collections. The account was set up in August and I have yet to hear from any collection agency. I was shocked, as I paid this bill on the day of service and again a few months later. I never heard anything from them again, via paper bill or phone call after I paid, so I assumed the account was taken care of. Now its in collections, and my credit is down to "fair" and in the 600s’!! I’m trying to despute this whole thing and possibly pay the .00, once again to try at least get the account closed. If I can’t prove that I paid and it stays on my record, how long will it take for my credit to go back up to above 700? I have good credit habits otherwise, and I have 11 accounts with a perfect payment history according to the report. I was planning on buying a house in about 5 years, and want to be able to get the rate I deserve with my otherwise perfect credit history.
This account is for a doctors office visit, in which I paid cash for, but they have no record of my payment.

My 11 accounts are student loans, many of which have less than ,000.
Spending more than my income is not the problem here! It’s pure clerical error. I live on 50% of my take-home pay. The remaining goes toward student loans. I put myself through college, and that debt was necessary and an investment in my future.

How do I rebuild my credit without having ever had any credit cards?

I have never had a credit card, but I have a few small bills in collections from when I was in college. They are old utilities bills, together totalling no more than 0. I haven’t been able to access my credit report online due to many address changes, but how bad can I expect my credit to be? How can I rebuild it now? I know debts in collections stay on your credit for 7 1/2 years whether you pay them or not. Help!

Dave Ramsey – Credit Card/Debt Collectors are SCUM

My hero, Dave Ramsey, tells of abusive practices and the violation of Federal law incorporated by debt collectors – particularly credit card debt collectors. Most people do not know that they have rights guaranteed to them by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and debt collectors knowingly and habitually break these laws in order to frighten them into paying. IT IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW TO OWE MONEY! Do not allow yourself to be lied to (example: “You’re going to go to jail if you don’t pay this” is one of their favorites!) or treated without the dignity you deserve. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS UNDER THE FDCPA: Collectors can NOT call you before 8 am or after 9 pm Collectors can NOT threaten to have you arrested or charged with a crime if you dont pay Collectors can NOT continue to call after you have indicated you want them to stop (record your conversation with them, tell them you ARE recording it, write the date and time down in a journal, and follow up with a certified letter stating they may no longer call.) Collectors can NOT call friends, family members or colleagues repeatedly in order to get you to pay (they may call your acquaintances ONCE in order to track you down and may NOT mention that you owe money or give ANY information that would lead someone to believe that they are attempting to collect a debt.) For more information on your rights under the FDCPA, please visit my website at www.myarrp.com (click on the “Help With Credit” link at the top.) To the scum
